AnnoBiblio
A collection of online resources I find instructive and entertaining, organized hierarchically by topic, and alphabetically by title within topic:
Trip Planning and Natural Resource Data
-avalanche centers of the US
-main site for the NPS; most individual park sites have basic BC maps, the quality of other info varies widely
National Resource Conservation Service Snotel
-current and past snow depth monitoring in the western USA
NOAA Interactive Snow Modeling
-when Snotel doesn’t have what you want, this is the next best thing; I’ve found its broad-brush accuracy to be quite good
USGS National Water Information System
-real time and historical stream flow data for the 50 states (plus Puerto Rico); absolutely invaluable
-silly name, and my new favorite online mapping tool; the route-distance estimation feature is very handy
Personal sites and blogs
-outstanding photography and trip reportage from the Missoula-based writer, adventurer, and family man; content is stochastic but high quality
-besides being one of the most prolific and dedicated outdoor bloggers, Jill Homer is a good friend, hardcore endurance athlete, and cage-rattler to all the internet spawned Walter Mittys of the world
-Luc’s anti-blog. Inspired and inspiring multi-sport adventure photography and videography.
-writing and videos from the pioneer of modern packrafting and one of the most accomplished of modern adventurers; one of my most cherished accomplishments as a blogger has been having Roman as a regular reader
-Ryan is many things, but perhaps first and foremost he is an idea man, and his blogging typically showcases him at his best; he’s in the same category as Teasdale, his blog could only be improved with more regular content
Discussion forums
-high quality discussion of backpacking and related topics; also online articles of good to extraordinary quality
-multiday mountain biking, racing and recreational riding; for the BC endurance rider MTBR has been rendered obsolete
-center of packrafting discussion
-the most BC oriented of the well-trafficed ski forums
-technically a blog, the commericalization and tech and discussion heavy content make it more at home in forum-land; this is the best place for cutting-edge BC ski tech
Gear makers (the best of the best, stuff I recommend almost without reservation)
-inventor of the modern packraft: the most paradigm breaking piece of outdoor gear available
-the most innovative shelter maker today, with a high production quality and reliable business which ought to be the model for all cottage gear shops
-on average the best maker of outdoor clothing, period; superlative customer service
-purveyer of gear that makes fly fishing fun again, fishing activist, and practitioner of a unique and admirable business model
