The Fleet

Julie the karate monkey, Josie the Xterra, and the new kid on the block (not yet operational), the pseudoSurly.

My answer to a fixie-townie-bar bike. The frame is an early 90’s Hardrock, canti-bosses chopped off and “custom” painted. The wheels I got today: old RX100 front hub and Surly flip-flop rear on Open Sports with DT 14/15 spokes. 18t Surly track cog and lockring. The rest of the parts were either obtained as cheaply as possible or culled from things lying around.

Rear tire is an IRC 38c, fat and thick. Plenty of room to spare. I still need a bb, and a 42t Surly ring to go with my cheapie cranks.

Front tire is a WTB Allterrainasaurus 35c. The front of the fork crown needed a little modification to fit it well. Brake is a Tektro long-reach, with Avid inserts and Kool-stop Dual compound pads.

Stem is stock. Bar is my old Titec, with Serfas gel tape I had left over (my fav). Lever is the stock Shimano canti-pull, with a pink Diacompe lever hood cover added for flair. Pink cable housing found in the stash of Bikesmith in Prescott. Headset is Specialized, $2 at Rim Cyclery last month.

I tracked down a Kalley 26.6 post, added my WTB Shadow V, and a Cdale yellow bottle cage.

And I added my own headbadge.

Coasting down the driveway without pedals looses its charm quickly, so I put the rear wheel on Julie to check chainline and size up the new bb. Voila, the chainline is perfect with the 118 bb, ring in the middle position. So, I took a fixed zip around the neighborhood with the huge front tire. Fun, weird and scary, but fun. It’ll be nice next week to get the Pseurly built up and running.

  1. That sure is some kind of bike you’ve got there, not really sure what kind though.

  2. Nice fleet. I have to admit I have mixed feelings about my growing bicycle inventory. They each have their purpose but perhaps it’s still excess. Hmm I better talk to James about that Ti FatBike today before I lose my nerve…
