The Debate

“This president has empowered Iran, he has empowered our enemies in Iraq, and he’s undermined our troops in the field. And we cannot support those policies.”

Jon Soltz

I’m glad I stayed home last night, grading papers and watching The News Hour. The aforementioned quotation was the turning point in one of the most interesting discussions I’ve seen on the show. Reading the text of the interview does not do it justice. Soltz and Morgan’s vitroil was pretty impressive.

My concern is that both sides of Congress are coming off as too political in regards to this. It seems to me that a large majority of citizens dispair over the current war, support the idea of supporting the troops, and are very concerned that our image in the world is suffering irreperable damage. Action is desired, politics are not. And by politics I mean petty concern for the big picture victory, for the party. Here, the forest is the tree.

So yeah, I got nothing. I did track down an excellent Mother’s Day present last night. There are few things more lothsome than a lame gift. My new rifle will also arrive next week, so can remember how to shoot and then go bag some rabbits. I am concerned that the .30-06 will blow the poor rabbit in half. I’ll have to aim for the head.

I hope to do enough grading that I’ll be able to go running this evening. Summer is looking at us over the hills, but hasn’t arrived yet.

Edit: This is fucking hilarious. Another students looking at me like I’m retarded moment. One of many.

  1. Haha yea Dicky is hillarious. I had to show Marni that picture. Especially with his “welcome to the gun show” line. KTR is coming up soon. Can’t wait to see you and Meredith there. Marni is crashing in Scott Sportman’s hotel room with his crew girl on Friday night after we start I think. What’s Meredith’s plan? Also do you guys have a hotel room in Moab for the night after? Apparently they’re all booked so I’m planning on sleeping on the air matress in the element somewhere pretty instead.

  2. ALL booked?! And everytime I’ve driven into town this year I sez “how do they support all these damn hotels that’r empty for 4 months a year?” Never underestimate the power of capitalism. Our “plan” was to crash in the parking lot Friday night; I hope to get in a nap before 2300 but I may be kidding myself on that one. Saturday, perhaps the support crew could snag a site on Sand Flats? It’d be convenient.Funny, as I was thinking while out running today that maybe I should think about calling the Red Stone Inn…..
