The eagle will land

Sooner than anyone expected! When I decided on a Lenz several days ago, I presumed I have months to search out good deals on parts while I waited for the frame.

Then Brain gave me a buzz. Brain Blair, the donkey, KMC runner up (and last place finisher), Mr. Chickenlegsofsteel hisself. He works at The Path, a SoCal wonderland of much reknown. Between his generosity and knowledge, and fact that Devin Lenz just happened to have a Dark Blue 3″ Leviathan laying around, will result in a built and ridden bike with the next two weeks. Amazing.

It’ll sport new WTB drops, 105 STI, a 20-29-40, and a 6 or 7 of nine (speed) in the back, plus the usual Thomson post, Salsa stem, King HS, Sugino cranks, UN-73, etc. A true enduro machine.

The monkey will take on a (perhaps) temporary form as a fixed/free rigid machine with v-brakes. Simple. I’ll take a bit of time to decide whether I can live without a disc in the front.

M is also getting a new/old rig, though a bit further in the future. She’s been talking smack about starting TI and the GDR next year, and will need a reliable rig that fits better than her current (my old) mtb. The medium (actually a small, by any normal standard) Soma the got shipped to us with a slightly dented headtube, and never picked up, will get fixed and built as a rigid, drop barred, 3 speed gravel machine. Sticking point will be the wheels, but it should be ready to go by fall.

All of this efficiency created a bit of a problem. I’m supposed to be working on my patience and whillingness to endure delayed gratification, and the wait for the Lenz had a major side benefit of facilitating that. Alas, my friends are too good for my own good.

Plans for the fourth await. Likely a short spin early, to beat the infernal heat. Then work, as the students never sleep. Then a choice, fireworks and relaxing, or a climb up Mt. Humphrey’s by Flag? We did a 15 miler in the Grand Canyon last year, which ended in a late night uphill death march (for M) and 3am arrival back home. Probably not a good thing to repeat, either in spirit or in fact.

Life is still good, especially after putting in some quality time in the gym this morning. It’ll be even better when it starts raining.

  1. that’s sweet that you found yourself a leviathan so quickly.any chance you’re looking to get rid of the monkey frame and/or parts? if so, what size is it?

  2. I’m keeping the Monkey, it’s an awesome frame that I love. Not too many parts on the block either, for the moment I’m trying to keep the transition as cheap and efficient (in terms of not buying stuff) as possible. Speedgoat.com has brown monkeys for $295, a steel in my opinion.I’ve been thinking about the selling of parts a lot recently, as I’ve got a small pile of random stuff that I’ll likely never use, basically none of which is worth selling. I’ve got a side bar for most of it, that needs to be updated. Swap meets like the one Dave Nice talked about recently make a ton of sense.

  3. May I clarify that I’m talking smack about starting TI this coming year- and doing the GDR when my magic fairy wings finally grow in.And last 4th was only a death march cause you decided you couldn’t be held back by my reasonable pace and blazed ahead- leaving me puttering uphill in the dark imagining all the mountain lions licking their lips right above my head.

  4. TransIowa eh? Haven’t decided if i’ll be back for that yet. If so it would likely be to duke it out at the front with gears.Nice bike man. While I”m not on the 29er train yet I do think that blue is quite dashing. It would look nice in my house and I could paint a room to match.

  5. Cool!FSer with the drop bars…you are going to start a new trend.

  6. Does this mean you are not interested in the Midges?Talk later. Congrats. I can’t wait to see it and ride it.

  7. Oh- he’s interested in the midges… or shall I say- I’m interested in the midges and he’s planning on buying them on my behalf- we’re putting together a 29er for me, I want to try big wheels and drop bars- as the more a mountain bike looks like a road bike- the more easily I’ll be tricked into riding it :)

  8. I AM the trend.I am the future. It’s gonna look pretty with a mango headset, too.

  9. thanks for the tip on the monkey’s at speedgoat. they’re even offering free shipping on orders over $100 right now. sweet deal. my new monkey is being packaged up for shipment as we speak.

  10. And Chris, you’re busted. Scott carbon, methinks.

  11. Geoff, good on ya. I absolutely adore that bike. It’s solid, and rides like much more than the sum of it’s parts. Surly hit it spot on.
