Scouting

I’ve got an Elk permit for two months from now that I’ve got to fill. The wrist, and missing out on 12 Hours of the Peaks, allowed me to get around to sorting out the massive area I’ve got to work in.

M and I found that most of the area is high desert scrub. Good for Pronghorn, horses and cows, perhaps for Elk but only in winter.

XXL stock tank. Amazing number of them, out in the middle of very little.

Some of the driving involved interesting roads.

Eventually, on foot in the highland pines, we found Elk sign.

Lots of driving, a good hike, and a bit of good target practice (with a pistol, my wrist can’t take the .30-06) and we were off for home.

First trip of many.

  1. I don’t see any holes in the sign. Ya must need more practice…

  2. hehehe DP!Man its been a bit sencie i’ve had elk!

  3. That’s the muther of all stock tanks. AZ DoW is all about making sure the critters are hydrated, eh? Ran into them using helicopters to haul water to remote stock tanks N of Vermillion cliffs after KMC…It’d take about a million chopper trips to fill that one though.
