Closure

Just as I did months ago with my applications, today I rode my bike to the post office, this time to send my tuition deposit.

It is done.

That was all the riding I did today too, just as yesterday’s exercise consisted of a beer and coffee run to Safeway and back. Legs felt good today, but I’m not too worried about over-resting right now.

Rather, I’m catching up on projects, maintenance and fun. The monkey got a brand new Nano on the back today, in the interest of more speed oriented, less technical rides upcoming. I’ve also been skidding the rear end quite a bit lately. Not sure if it’s me being unused to a v-brake or the tire, but I aim to find out.

I also tied my B-17. The edges have been flaring out on long rides lately, chaffing my legs in a most unwelcome manner.

No longer.

The cord is all one piece, looped through and tied underneath. It firmed the saddle up enough that I was able to let off quite a few turns on the tension bolt. I will say, my butt was not the least bit sore after this weekend. Singlespeeding helps, but this is a great saddle.

And most shocking of all: Normalcy.

The Lev is still unwhole, with a rigid fork and M’s non-TI back wheel. But it’ll be back in action very soon, coming full circle with old red. I do worry about ulnar issues, and Ergons seem very worth trying.

Further news concerns the AZT 300, starting Friday. It’s going to be a race this year, with 5 or 6 folks with a reasonable shot at the win, and I certainly a new record. In fact, I’ll be surprised if at least two people don’t come in under Scott’s time from 2006. The odds-making, such as is it:

Scott: The default favorite. Unequaled knowledge and savvy. Has spent the last few weeks in hibernation, consulting with his own personal Yoda no doubt. Will power and knowledge come together?

Chad: It is my firm belief that this guy hasn’t begun to push his limits with endurance cycling. Potential for a huge, breakout ride this weekend. Question number 1: will his bike hold together?

Max: Strong as a bull, tough as a leather boot. Serious Arizona kharma. Question number 1: will he stay un-lost?

Chris: He used to be just fast, this year has been kinda silly thus far. Massive implosion aside, I see no way that we won’t finish. The only question, just how huge a handicap is singlespeed and rigid on this course?

Jefe: Precedent on the GLR and CTR make him a force to be watched. Will a Gunnisonite hold up to the heat?

Fred: Mental toughness and optimism second to none. Are the legs there? No way do I believe he’s as untrained as he claims.

Rider X: He might have some base fitness already this year, and may have had some time to get used to the heat and rocks. Popeye forearms and a lantern jaw do add weight and detract from aerodynamics, but sometimes you have to look at the big picture. Watch out!!!

I’d be remiss to not mention Marshal, and anyone else bold enough to line up at the start. Nathan and I both agreed Sunday, this is a whole new level of suffering. Your world and mine are better for these crazy bastards being in it, especially this week.

Add.: This granola is really good, and if you go here it’s free!
