Ha!

I can’t help but find this amusing, having been exposed to so many “creative” names over the last two years. Highlights include:

Twonniqua
Brejonique
Chala
Georscha
Rikki
Cierra (and the many variations thereof)
..and lots at can’t recall right now

It’s worth noting that not all of the above were black. A year or so ago we had a rash of students with every intention of naming their daughters Neveah (heaven backwards), which was in the top 30 in girls’ names in Arizona last year. Few if any seemed desirous of grasping the irony therein, and it left a colleague and I wondering at all the Neveah’s we’d have as students in 15 years or so.

I may end up doing something akin to this during my Masters practicum, but it’ll be nice to take a break for at least a little while. 26 months is a long time. Longest I’ve ever had a job, in fact.

I appear to be growing up.

  1. read “Freakonomics” by Stephen Levitt

  2. I knew a girl named “Lesbia” You have to wonder what her parents were thinking when they named her that…not that there is anything wrong with the lifestyle choice- but it sounds like they had a plan for her at the start.I also went to high school with a girl named Daiquiri…..no one picked on her though because her dad was an alcoholic. It was just too sad to even find humor in it.Same school also had a guy named Elvis and another one named Gomer…..God I am so glad I moved….
