Except of course, when it is.
Laurie called last night. Said she had the use of an injured friend’s pass and would thus be whiling to subsidize my ticket for the pleasure of my company. I of course said yes.
It rained up to around 5500′ a few days ago, and it was easy to tell today. Windpack and a bit of powder over crust up high, ice and death cookies towards the bottom. Powder makes me a better skier than I am (see last post). Funky but generally softish I can handle okay. Ice and dc’s prey upon the weaknesses of my setup mercilessly, wanting to twist the leather boots around, snag an inside edge, and yard sale me upon the slope. I mostly avoided that by doing a lot of side slipping.
Highlight of the day was the company. Second highlight was linking turns down East Bowl (a Snowbowl black) twice. Steepest thing I’ve ever tried to ski, and I did pretty damn well, staying slow but in control the whole time. Thanks to Laurie for waiting for me and pushing my comfort zone a bit. A buncha runs, snacking on the lift, a beer at the bar, and home. Legs torched hips to toes.
