Backcountry skiing

Is really becoming quite the fun thing.
Start with breakfast in the dark.

Add a nice dawn on the hill.
Good views.
And good skiing (the pissing drizzle in town last night fell up high as a few inches of fresh fluff).
And finish it off with a challenge.
What had been bomber tree skiing in powder last week was cement sludge on the way out today.  I had set a goal of 5,000′ of skiing and a 1300 departure time, and made both.  Summation, the worst snow and most sustained bush (above) were on tired legs at the end.  All part of the learning process.

I did four runs down the cut in the third picture, which were just fantastic.  Really felt my rhythm on the third.  Another on more crusty snow dropped down the rib below the site of the fourth photo, linking turns the whole way with one stuffed-tip faceplant.  Little things like linking turns is a big deal for little me.
Best run of the day was the penultimate, biggest skin, longest descent (save the exit) steeper, wide trees, fantastic snow, focus and making myself ski as well I can right now.  Big bowl between rock towers, magic.
That stoke was muffled by the horrid snow on the last run.  I had to fight and fight to get both edges around as fast as I needed to.  More velocity would’ve likely made a big difference, but I am not that confident, yet.
5k of skiing, 5k of skinning, 5 hours.  A good way to start the day.

  1. Legs ache. Also, worth surfing over to Wildsnow.com and checking the ongoing 24 Hours of Sunlight rando race. One to do in the future (29 minutes up and down 1.5k is pretty sick).

  2. What skis are you using? Can you ski on them at resorts?

  3. That is a very good day Dave! Speed is your friend in the funky snow.
