One for the book

For the future book:

The DRTE 100 near Santa Barbara.  34k+ of gain, 1 mile of pavement, it’s not even a full loop! (Foot race bikers, sorry.)  I’d only have to miss one day of class to do it this fall….
For the book of past fun:
A very informative, essentially free ($10) avy class up at Snowbowl today.  Beacon practice, pit digging, snow tests.  Taught simply and well by qualified locals from the Missoula Avalanche center.  We even got in a few runs commuting our way around.  Good news, the problematic base looks to have finally solidified (for the most part) with the last few weeks of warming.  Bad news, surface hoar, and snow on the way.  Looks like my birthday present will be a beacon.
Highlight was a fun run down east bowl with a crew of new folks and future skiing partners.  Eric W. charging and crashing, getting after it full on with leathers and Atomic Rainers, roots telemarker and green hair.
Did I mention it was one of the best bluebird days I’ve seen yet in Montana?!
Add.:
It is almost my birthday, and thus that time in AZ.  I guess you can’t have everything, at least at once.

  1. Buy a shovel for your partner to carry before you buy a beacon, unless they already have one. Sounds like a fun day and can’t pass up the $10 investment, damn.

  2. That time indeed. With no out-of-towners we just rode from home.35k elevation gain in 100 miles with all those dirt roads?I think not.
