This is sort of basic, but what is a bivvy sack/bag? Some sort of liner that goes around a sleeping bag to keep it water tight?Seriously lacking in the camping without a tent knowledge base:(Also saw your pole recommendation for the canyon in the other post. I have never been interested in them, but they may benefit the wife on our very short canyon debut hike. She is not what you would call an experienced hiker in any way.Brand you like?E

A bivvy is just what you said, an envelope that’ll keep your bag dry in rain and snow. Originally (as far as I can tell) invented by mountaineers for sitting on ledges where a tent wouldn’t fit. Some bivvy sacks have zippers, some fancy poles that make them kinda like a tent, etc.I like Black Diamond poles, because the flicklock closure is in my experience the most durable and simplest. Mine are basic BD Traverse poles, and are about 10 years old now. The newer, fancy cork grips seem like they’d be real nice.
