The route investigations and research for Le Parcour has taken on quite a durable life. It’s kept me up late last night, and pushed back work this evening. Certainly not a bad thing.
At the moment I’ve got three distinct options circling my head:
1: The central tour
Straight through the heart of the Bob, entirely on foot, following much of the Continental Divide Trail. Unlikely to be less than 150 miles. Doable in 4-5 days, likely. I would prefer company especially on this one, but unless Kevin Sawchuk signs on that seems unlikely.
2: East side sneak
I’ve mapped out a very satisfactory route on the east side of the Rocky Mountain front. Dirt roads to Gibson Reservoir, 20+ miles of unknown singletrack to Teton Pass road, a bit of road and trail riding, then a less than 20 mile bike portage up the N Fork of the Teton down into the S Fork of Birch Creek down to Birch Reservoir. Then 25-30 (?) miles of riding up to and down the Two Medicine River, popping out right at the finish. The fly in the ointment is a mile at most stretch of paved MT highway 435 going into Augusta that cannot be avoided. And riding in the ditch makes the whole eastern bit seem a contrivance. It would be fast, tho.
3: Youngs and South Fork
Ride Highway 200 west to Monture Creek, up to Youngs Pass, then just shy of 50 miles of carrying the bike out to Hungry Horse. No major climbs along the way. The riding along the east shore, and a “quick” carry over the ridge and down to the highway. Ryan J. seems to think most of Youngs and the S Fork will be floatable, which certainly makes this the easy on the feet option. If I hadn’t spent my pennies on skis and bike parts last winter and spring and had an Alpacka instead, this would be a sure winner. Especially if you could float a bit in the dark. I’ve thought about giving it a go with no raft, but carrying a 50+ lb pack 50 miles straight does not sound fun.
A work in progress. I have been trying to keep the gear madness under control.
Also found this, the unedited version that Roman had been hiding. I like the Narrows and Subway footage (why hadn’t I discovered video back in January?!), and particularly like the music.
