Victory

I gave up on indexing.  The problem described in the comments a few posts ago went away, then came back again.  Not worth the effort to sort out.  Normally I’d ride the singlespeed in such situations but the single limits road speeds to the TH and fishing spots, and the singlespeed is out of commision pending funds to buy a proper rear wheel.

So I went old school.

Homemade thumbie mount, Shimano friction shifter, 30t front ring, 11-13-17-20-23 rear cogs, old Shimano road mech.

Almost exactly the setup I had on my first 29er four years ago.  Idea is that spinning out sucks (moreso here in Missoula, where riding to trails is so easy), and that I’ve always been stronger climbing singlespeed style v. geared.

I left the front derailleur on as a chainguide, put on the lighter bashguard (thinner and easier to space outboard so the chain doesn’t rub in 30×11), and put my Atomlab platforms pedals on (sick of changing shoes on fishing trips).

We’ll see how long the changes last, but I know have a fully functional mountain bike.  The circularity of some bike preferences make me wonder, occasionally, if all the upgrades I’ve made over the years have made me a better rider.  To a certain extent the answer is yes, in other respects no.  I am certain that had I stuck with the Midges I’d have nerve damage in my hands.  Buying Eric’s Reba has been some of the best money I’ve ever spent on gear.

I also have a job interview in Kalispell on Thursday.  Wish me luck.  I’m using the drive as an excuse to do a backpacking/packrafting/fishing trip on the North Fork of the Flathead tomorrow and Thursday morning.  Hope to spend some time meditating around the fire at night and get my game face on.

Starting tomorrow, you will be able to follow along here.  Right now, I go ride!
