Huh? Or a lack of skin
Why is it that the silly and innocuous posts get all the comments? Me no get. I’m just going to presume I’m above my audience most of the time. Another boring evening drinking beer. Hung out with M, made fun of Outside’s new startup mag Go. It’s a bizarre blend of GQ, Maxim, and an…

(boring post)
Teaser for Hairball. You could be here, this weekend, eating a sandwich at 0800. I’ve hit back onto a good cycle this weekend, one I maintained well earlier in the year: spend the weekend getting thrashed, then go to work on Monday, start chipping away at the list of grading, writing, etc, attend the afternoon…

Whooped
I had a fantastic day riding with Chad on Elden. One of the best I’ve had in a very long time (KTR weekend excepted, another category). Before the KTR I felt pressured to prepare well, after I was afflicted with a post-race malaise. I’m shaking that off, finally. The one thing which did not go…

Gettin’ whooped
I’m gonna be hurtin’ Monday morning. This morning I got out to test the fitness for the Wahsatch in two weeks. Went up 62 in 38 minutes, a good 90 seconds off my best. It wasn’t easy, but it’ll do. This afternoon I rode Granite with James and Paul, folks I’ve known on the net…

Trail questions
Trail usage, especially insofar as it relates to federal land use designation, is a complex issue. The conflict I find myself in the middle of so often is this: the 1964 Wilderness Act prohibits “mechanized” travel. This has come to mean bikes, though in the 60’s mountain biking as a coherent user group did not…

Stop. Go here. Enjoy. You got me all fired up this morning DH, now I’m running around scaring my students with ninja sounds. Thanks! One to keep in the near file for future use. Evening edit: Stefan posted another extraordinary report on MTBR, and now Fred throws down the gauntlet: Grand Loop description coming up.…

The meaning of accidents
From today’s NPS Morning Report (emailed to me by M this afternoon): Zion National Park (UT) Canyoneer Killed In Fall In Heaps Canyon Keith Beidermann, 48, of Garden Grove, California, fell to his death while canyoneering in Heaps Canyon the evening of Monday, June 4th. Beidermann’s two companions were at the Upper Emerald Pools waiting…

The evening
Went bouldering tonight; climbing outside for the first time since October. (!) What’s remarkable is how well I did. Over a decade of practice keeps the technique at the top of the bag, finger power and skin thickness had to be pulled out of the bottom and dusted off thoroughly. I even managed to get…

Meatball
Whether the interpretations are classical or modernist, one thing is certain: there’s never been a better time to order meatballs in America. Perhaps a meatball renaissance was inevitable… I like meatballs, and like making them even more. Intriuging though it sounds, duck and cherry seems a bit excessive.

Best seat in the house
This would be it:The lookout seat on the south end of Spruce Mountain. 7.7k and a stiff breeze was a welcome contrast in the last days of spring. Nice to know we always have a bit of the alpine a few miles from home. Rolling hills, Prescott, and Granite Mountain. Part of the Prescott Monstercross…
