Good Morning

Lame though it is, and found only via checking email, this is rather interesting. The racial statistics in particular are revealing, though I find it enormously frustrating to see that half the country regards a gay couple parenting as problematic. The issues faced by a single-parent household pale besides those of a dysfunctional couple, though dysfunctionality cannot be simply surveyed. I can only presume that homosexual parents tend to be more affluent and stable on average, to say nothing of having a proclivity to do things like adopt children out of disadvantageous situations.

Yahoo News is good for something besides Spice Girl reunion tours. My cynical side thinks that Geri needs more $$ for Gucci.

Of with you, go about your business!! M and I have “Spin 101” this evening…

  1. I saw that article as well.Notice that they surveyed “Americans” about what factors they associated with successful marriages. The answers come from a population with a greater than 50% divorce rate and reflect perceptions, rather than the reality of what makes a good marriage.Better to survey 70-80 yo folks married 40-50 years about what factors contributed to their great marriage (assuming they were satisfied with it).Interesting none the less.

  2. Indeed. There’s a book I read, can’t recall the title at the moment, where a therapist interviewed a number of successful couples (evaluated as such by third parties, ie friends and colleagues) at length about their relationships. Very interesting and well done. M, can you help us out on this one?

  3. The Good Marriage- by Judith Wallerstein. Friends and colleagues referred couples- and then both members of the couple, interviewed independently, had to think their marriage was “good”- according to their own definitions. And then she did extensive in and out of home interviews of the couples to form the case studies and reach her conclusions.Always happy to help out :)
