Saturday

What to do after a tough week at work, when I’m not allowing myself to ride that much? Go to the gym, cook, and work on bikes.

Yesterday I got my old Phil off the Gunnar.

A little cleaning and it’s good as new (only difference are the broken in bearings). Amazing for 18 months locked away and beaten on. In preparation for the Lev’s arrival the Phil went into the monkey, along with shorter cranks.

M’s gravel road machine is also taking shape. All we need to buy are wheels and brakes. Given her intended use the wheels will be very light indeed. Once I get a bb and cranks on it.

Getting the headset in the Soma this morning was interesting. I used the fork steerer to reset the headtube dent, and had to use pliers to round out the edge enough to force the King in, using the sophisticated stump and rubber mallet method. I’m happy it worked as easily as it did, it was a job no shop would touch.

Interrupting the flow of otherwise good work was a non-driveside crank on my fixie that fully stripped out when I tried to remove it. I may have overtorqued the puller at first, but was not uncareful trying the extract it. I’m now in the process of hacksawing the crank in half to get it off the bb. Fun.

Off to do a night ride with Eric in a bit, then M and I are hiking Humphries tomorrow. Then Colorado calls.

  1. Gave up on the saw, beat the shit out of it with a hammer until it flew off. Then put it in the recycle.
