Further musings on TransUtah

HUGE flood in Zion. Black water?! Wow.

Of yeah, this is post 300. On to the future:

Alaska Wilderness Classic rules? Pick a start and a finish (or keep them the same) and have various checkpoints that must be hit. Route choice open, checkpoints placed such that road bikes wouldn’t be a possible choice.

Fascinating mental gymnastics. I know so little about the Aquarius plateau, though the bit of riding I did above highway 12 last fall was very promising.

Or just let DH make the choice for us, in the end…….

Regardless, as I likely won’t have a packraft by October, I may ride Poison Springs/Hatch as a loop from a camp in North Wash. Or buy a cheapo raft and brave the Green and Colorado along the loop, which is an intriguing option. Been thinking about it for ages. (All invited, of course; those not in a Moab training hole.)

Wish list for October vacation:

-Grand Confluence Loop
-Robbers Roost canyons
-Choprock, and perhaps the Bakers
-some riding/exploration in the Aquarius
-Brian Head loops (before the snow)
-full Subway
-Little Creek mesa

I don’t think I can do all that in one week. Damn.

  1. Umm- several thoughts…When was the Zion picture taken??? If it was today then when you get home I’m going to be packed and ready to go- we’ll drive up there tonight- you can call in sick tomorrow.Second- you’re going to do Choprock by yourself??? Or have you been colluding with Ram today???More maybe in two hours when you’re home :)

  2. I’ve been trying to figure out the pic location. It was on the canyons group a couple days ago, as Telephone, but that doesn’t look like it.I like the idea of leaving for the weekend!

  3. On further examination, I think the photo is from the Temple parking lot, looking northish.

  4. Are you kidding me??? It’s obviously the one at the Temple of Sinewava. It’s the only one up there that routinely flows of any consequence. We’ve seen it before. And it is Telephone Canyon- I have the Zion topo in front of me right now :) Telephone opens up, turns east, joins a few unnamed drainages and then heads for the Virgin right after the Narrows open up.

  5. so many lines on a map i wanna fallow so little time!
