The 508. Huge road ride through the Mojave desert and Death Valley. Massive entry fee, logisitics, waiting list, etc. Why?

You never have more than 120 miles between towns, so why not do it self-supported? ‘Course, that opens it to all sorts of other modifications. For one, I’d do it in Janurary, not October.

Of all the road rides around, this one actually seems interesting.

One thing I do like about the race, rather than a number each team is assigned a “totem” animal to identify and facilitate mojo. Highlights of the “animals” include: Dung Mite, Hippogriff, Yodeling Plankton, and Flying Fishstix.

    this has always apealed to me as well….maybe we should do an alt 508?

    I had plans to do the 508 this year. Even drove the entire route last December and did the Death Valley Double in the spring. Conclusion: too friggin boring. No mental stimuli…Check out the HooDoo 500. That one looks really appealing. http://www.hoodoo500.com And the promoter is top notch. Even did the Creampuff this year.Also check out some of John Mazzola’s routs at http://www.nmbrevets.com The AZ Brevet series has some big miles, but usually pretty flat courses.

    The Hoodoo route looks cool, some pretty good climbs but nothing too heinous. I imagine they were thinking of avoiding any chance of snow, but that Hurricane-Fredonia stretch will be hot, and BORING!Course, for any of this I’d need a road bike…

    And again, the Hoodoo route would lend itself very, very well to a solo and unsupported effort. Plenty of places to get food and water.
