Busy weekends

Very evocative.

Next two in California, the next in Moab, and perhaps the next in New Mexico. Have to see what the fitness is doing by then, but I’ve never been to that part of the state, and Matt’s races sound like they’ve been really good. That and in the last two weekends I’ve filled up on being home.

It also occurs to me that Taos and Sante Fe ought to be investigated in our quest to find a next home. Here’s a list of attributes, by way of brainstorming.

Me
-Year round or very nearly open trails, at least close by.
-A real winter with snow and occasional temps below O(F).
-Small enough town so I can ride to ride/run, and get groceries and go to the bar on a bike without fearing for my life.
-Lots of sunshine.
-A job might be useful, at least until M’s business starts supporting us both.
-Scenic splendor.

I think the key to having these things is a diversity of relief very close by. When we searched for places to live last spring, I said we had to have at least 3k (or maybe it was 5) of relief within 10 miles. That may not have been adequate. The heat and blah of this summer have gotten to me, and I want to be done. No more AZ for me, unless it’s Flag.

Thoughts?

  1. Southern California has 11K relief in the San Gabriels.Lots of jobs.Impossibly expensive real estate, and it sucks to live there. The geography is really, really nice, however. I’ll never go back.

  2. PS:How about Grand Junction? I looked fairly seriously there, but the job was not as suitable.

  3. M has a Grand Junction prejudice, on unknown origin. I think the area has a lot going for it, especially in terms of the diversity of geography close at hand.

  4. The last time we were in Grand Junction it didn’t seem quite as bad as I remember… but we can do better!!!And I just found out- Season Passes for AngelFire at $400-500… which is less then half the cost of Sun Valley- which means it’s not good enough for me… sorry Taos is out.

  5. Opps… that last comment was me :)I believe last time you said 5,000 feet within 20 miles…we still have that map of the US where we outline all locations in the country that fit that requirement…

  6. Is Durango on that map? Durango seems like a great place to live, although I’ve never lived there. Probably several towns in Colorado that fit that requirement. Talkeetna, Alaska, might also. You get lots (and lots) of Sunshine … from May to August. Then “real (really real) winter” the rest of the year. What more could you ask for?

  7. Thx for the shout out…Yeah Santa Fe rocks. Much more rideable terrain than Flag, way better food (it’s not even a comparison), and pretty damn good beer at both 2nd Street and Santa Fe Brewing Co. Oh yeah SF has something called art there too. But it’s gonna cost you big $$$ to be close to where the trails are….Taos has that endless trail feel like Durango does and the skiing is world class there, but it’s pretty light on the social scene.
