Good luck, Moab

“A man ‘of sound mind’ is one keeps the inner madman under lock and key.” -Paul Valery

Time to get after it.

My own forcast looks very good for tomorrow, high of 66 at the river, >40 % cloud cover from 0900 on. Getting that old twist of the gut anticipatory feeling, one with whom I want to make better friends.

The cupboard is stocked with Twizzlers, Chocolate w/ pb, and Gu. Ham steak and eggs for tomorrow early morning. A pile of layers to bring and evaluate at the TH is lined up and listed in my head.

The twist gets worse as I write.

And what is it I fear? The process. I know I can do this, I’ve done it exactly before, and things like it many more times. The fear is taking a step forward into Eliot’s Shadow, onto the treadmill that pushes forward by not moving at all. Greatness, intrapersonal greatness, lies out there in a small and personal way. I’m still not sure about bringing the camera tomorrow, beyond space being at a premium, taking pictures of such moments can be intimidating, and mildly pornographic.

Valery again:

“A work is never completed except by some accident such as weariness, satisfaction, the need to deliver, or death: for, in relation to who or what is making it, it can only be one stage in a series of inner transformations.”

and

“The history of thought may be summed up in these words: it is absurd by what it seeks and great by what it finds.”

Riding last night I saw the fall’s first javelina out in Granite Basin. Autumn in the desert is the season for a last gasp of a new beginning.

Have a good weekend.

  1. Good stuff. Missed you at GB (was there 3-6pm).Still loving the Lenz beyond belief.I have similar thoughts before big rides that I know are a bit risky (National, trail 37). Or before a big case you know you can do, but still…. Anything that requires one to step up prompts such thoughts.

  2. Ha! I rode a loop from Williamson, up, into, and back Mint Wash from 520-630.We need to ride soon.
