Yesterday:
Busted out of town at 0830, in the rain. Survived Phoenix, fought sustained 50 mph gusts down to Tucson. Found Chad’s place, and a very disorganized Chad. Hang around, pack, leave. Meet Tom, ride a good piece of sweet new AZT, under gorgeous 70 degree sun. South to KY camp, eat dinner, hang out in the wind, drink beer, sleep.
Today:
Wake up vaguely at 0300 to rain on the truck. Wake up for real at 0600 to rain, make coffee and eggs in the truck, look at the rain. Tom decides to be smart and bails, Chad, Max, Benji and I go out for 2 hours. The Arizonans enjoying novel riding conditions. Rain, rain, strong wind, mud, and rain. Heading back Max flats, then flats again at the windiest possible location. Cold hands. Rapidly decreasing front brake pads. The Mountain King continues as a fantastic mud tire. Eat lots of mud down the hill. Lament the lack of a camera to capture the destruction.
Recoup and clean lots of mud at Chad’s. Sit around. Eat eggs, potatoes, avocado. Read cycling magazines. Wait for rain to end. Enjoy crunchy bike sounds.
Rain ends. Do Chad’s suburban assault loop, east. Prepare to eat dinner.
Not too bad.
