Monday

Not much more to say, really.

Today is the last week before Spring Break, before California! I even have this Friday off, for (ahem) a doctor’s visit down on South Mountain. Doctor Chad, that is.

In celebration, I just drank the last of Matt’s beer. Thanks Matt. Beer makes me happy. Or to be more precise, is a fantastic facilitator of happiness and post-work and meeting relaxation.

It’s been a quick few weeks since President’s Day. It is odd that I measure time between more-than-weekends-off from work? Normal, certainly. Perhaps disturbingly so. But that’s how it is.

A colleague, one of the one’s I deeply like and respect, said last week that if he won the lottery he would most certainly quit. I would not. Take much more vacation, surely; stay on as a volunteer, very likely. But quit? Not now. Besides, I can’t ride all day. Bike purchasing post-lottery might be more problematic. But the life can’t be all rose.

PS: Right as I wrote that the rejection letter from the University of Denver shows up. Ouch. OUCH. It really pushes my buttons to be judged as inadequate on an intellectual basis. That’s been my stuff, my stock-in-trade since I was a very little kid. My parents both had/have terminal degrees for chissakes, and I’m 27 and haven’t gone to graduate school! And unlike Grad school v1, my ambivalence about it all was not so much of a factor. I am, at the moment, quite at a loss as to how I was lacking. Montana is where all the cards lie, it would seem.

Sorry Chris, Ed, Jeny, Dave, and Marni. Looks like life has other plans. ???

  1. Sad! Sorry to hear that! If DU doesn’t want you, it’s their loss. I hope something even better pops up for you.

  2. Crap!They suck, you rock!Ed

  3. Wow I’m shocked. I’d say I was disappointed but I know you’re much more so than me. But I am disappointed nonetheless.Like Ed said, YOU ROCK! Wherever you end up, those people will be very lucky.

  4. Montana….. Hmmmmm (silence as I start to ponder). Sounds like I might have a place to stage our 2009 GDR attempt (key word=our).

  5. When I applied to med school, I was bound and determined to get back to my beloved California. I applied to U of Ill. “just in case” and was quickly accepted.I then had to watch rejection after rejection from seven CA schools come in the door. It was a hard pill to swallow for someone always in the top few percentile academically. In retrospect there was possibly a large racial component to it, but that is neither here nor there.I attended U. of I., and ended up meeting my beloved. Life has never been the same, and has never been better. What is the point of the story?First, I can absolutely relate, and am sorry to hear about the letter.Second, things will work out…Providentially I believe for your best. Life is not random, even if you don’t believe in Providence:)

  6. You will really like Montana… better learn to ski… You will love life in the backcountry during the winter! A quiet that you have never (actually you probably have) heard before… eh, F**K DU! Great write up on the weekend adventure!

  7. Bummer man…Thems some good riding up in MT too…maybe pack the bear spray or shotgun?

  8. You all rock, too!!!

  9. Grad school acceptance is bs. I triple major in Geol., Bio., and Botany as an undergrad. One of my second tier choices turned me down for not being focused . Spent most of my academic career in Missoula, btw.

  10. Oh shit – I didn’t realize the ursine import till I read Whiskey’s comment – but I don’t like bears.

  11. Sorry to hear it Dave. I have mixed experiences with DU so I think you might actually be better off somewhere else anyway! Waiting is no fun. I have a letter coming from a scholarship committee sometime in the next couple weeks. Its a big deal that could affect grad school options myself.Hard to balance not being attached while also having confidence in who you are and what you want. I have enough faith in both of you to know that something good will come you way and you will make it great. Fingers crossed for you.

  12. you know, dave — colorado is too crowded anyway. ed and might move in with you. how does that sound?jj

  13. I think we could make that work… M would like Tonka.

  14. Jj – I’ll put you both to work sewing purses… how does that sound???Not like there’d be anything else for you to occupy your time with in Montana… maybe fending off bears…but really – you should all seriously consider moving – Colorado is just so 90’s!!!
