1st adventure

Time to start exploring. What with Bill at the Butte 100 today, and Brian and Dave and everyone at Leadville, I owed the world a good one. I decided to ride from home to the Lolo Peak trailhead, and hopefully climb the peak. At a bit over 9k, it’s the tallest thing you can see from town. Apparently it was ski-able for the 4th of July this year.

There are trees up here!

Unfortunately, 0700 was too late a start. I saw this when I topped the ridge around 1100.

I pressed on a bit further, before thunder sent me skittering down into the trees, chased by rain, hail, and 40 mph gusts.

Town.

I hid in the trees, ate my lunch, enjoying it being cold, and packed it in to home. Something like 40 miles of pavement, 17 miles of logging road, 9 miles of hiking, from 3.3k up to 8k and back again, all in 7 hours.

I like this place.

  1. other than the pure sweetness of that exploratory report — two things caught my eye: 1.) that the trail was still covered in snow until july, and 2.) that you sat there enjoyed the ‘cold.’i bet that coolness is a huge relief from the az summer heat ……. one question: do you have a bike you like to ride in the snow!?!?!?yes, ed is off the hook for pretty much everything until after the vt125. he is in ‘vapor lock.’we do hope to see you soon tho!jj

  2. The monkey does ok in the snow. More importantly, I have skis!!!

  4. Awesome adventure – looks like you’ve got a new place to explore that is worthy of your adventuresome nature.
