Riding Rims

Another day, another DNF, and strangely I could not care less.

I didn’t expect good fitness today, and didn’t have it, so I took my time and enjoyed the day, stopping whenever I felt like it. Most folks seemed frisky, so I was way off the back way quick. The overlook on Seven Mile Rim was too nice to pass up, so I put on a windshirt, lay my head down on my pack, and took a good long while to observe the blue sky and contemplate the universe. I may or may not have fallen asleep in the process. I realized that a large part of what I came to endurance racing to find I’m currently getting from my work at school, and said revelation brushed away my remaining ambitions beyond having fun. So I kept on along the course, deviating whenever a side-option needed investigating. I did ride the dirt “deal breaker” alternative to 313, which was slow. Future rides may well be true monsters.

I skipping Metal Masher and Two Turtles, because I wanted to ride Blue Dot in it’s entierty, which I did. It’s a great climb, and the trip across the rim had never seemed faster. Grind it back to the start, hang out, eat, drink, talk.

Good.

PS
Go check out Mike’s photos from our ride yesterday. They come close to capturing it, high praise indeed. Fantastic to roll into town, and an hour later be spinning up and out with such a crew.

Spring break’s starting out well.

  2. I wish I was there to drag you to the finish!!! :D Long da… hope you had fun even though it was tough times.

  3. The reality of it is that fitness is worse than it was back in Jan, especially on the top end. Which is, uh, not what you want on that course. It’ll be harder next year, and I’ll be back.PSToast went under 10. Sick.

  4. Glad you had a great ride regardless of the DNF. What makes you say that future routes will be monsters? Does Fred not think it is hard enough currently? :)
