10 months of skiing

First day of skiing this season was late October.  As of today, we’re still going strong.

Jewel has good corn early, and is remarkably un-suncupped.

The silt plume in Flathead Lake is pretty impressive.

Black Lake is still frozen almost totally solid, and the parking lot at Camp Misery is under a good 6 feet of snow.  On the walk out I had to explain to some confused hikers that it’d be awhile until jeans and loafers would be appropriate Jewel attire.

  1. Likewise over here, in the Northwest. The Turns All Year crowd (http://www.turns-all-year.com/index.html) is loving it. Even folks that normally switch to hiking boots by now (like me) are still skiing. I plan on skiing Sunrise, on Mount Rainier, despite the lack of bathrooms (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2015420293_sunrise25m.html). You can still do a lot of skiing, without carrying your skis. This may continue for another month, or longer (http://www.bellinghamherald.com/2011/06/30/2083115/artist-point-parking-lot-wont.html).

  2. I’m not massively psyched to keep skiing, but the last few times out have been pretty awesome. What I’m really looking forward to in August packrafting and fly fishing. The rivers will still have good flow, I’m betting.
