M and I sat down and did some math this afternoon. Wednesday the 30th of July will be my last day of work. The next day we’ll head north. This will give us a couple days to pull the drive, convenient move-in time, and a few weeks to settle in before I’ll start grad school orientation.
We also did the math on U-Hauls, and decided that if I won’t fit in a 5′ by 8′ trailer, it won’t be coming along. Funny to think that when we moved here in June of 2006, we did it in the Xterra. Exclusively.
The future also means leaving the desert SW behind, which is sad to think of. People and places will be missed. Ergo, gotta make the most of what remains. Here’s one idea, inspired by this morning’s raft activity.

Descend the Bright Angel to the Tonto, head west, descend Horn Creek, cross the river (in a pool toy?), ascend 91 mile Canyon, then on around Shiva Temple to the rim. Across to the lodge, resupply, then a normal return along the Kaibab. Butchart said to allow two days for the first leg to the north rim, so it should be doable in one day with an alpine start putting one at Horn around dawn. Ass kicking, but doable. Perhaps later ?? if snow allows.
It also means that vacations have suddenly become finite. So here they are:
-Bike Camp in the last week of April
-The 15-18 of May for the KTR
-June 14-28, Kaibab and trips to Missoula (to find a home), Seattle (little sis), and points south (Oregon Steve?, Sierra east side Brian?, Big Spring Canyon that last weekend Phillip?)
-July 4th weekend for the Markagunt Ride, and some time in Zion
That’s it. Damn.
