The Future

Royal Arch Creek

M and I sat down and did some math this afternoon. Wednesday the 30th of July will be my last day of work. The next day we’ll head north. This will give us a couple days to pull the drive, convenient move-in time, and a few weeks to settle in before I’ll start grad school orientation.

We also did the math on U-Hauls, and decided that if I won’t fit in a 5′ by 8′ trailer, it won’t be coming along. Funny to think that when we moved here in June of 2006, we did it in the Xterra. Exclusively.

The future also means leaving the desert SW behind, which is sad to think of. People and places will be missed. Ergo, gotta make the most of what remains. Here’s one idea, inspired by this morning’s raft activity.

Descend the Bright Angel to the Tonto, head west, descend Horn Creek, cross the river (in a pool toy?), ascend 91 mile Canyon, then on around Shiva Temple to the rim. Across to the lodge, resupply, then a normal return along the Kaibab. Butchart said to allow two days for the first leg to the north rim, so it should be doable in one day with an alpine start putting one at Horn around dawn. Ass kicking, but doable. Perhaps later ?? if snow allows.

It also means that vacations have suddenly become finite. So here they are:

-Bike Camp in the last week of April
-The 15-18 of May for the KTR
-June 14-28, Kaibab and trips to Missoula (to find a home), Seattle (little sis), and points south (Oregon Steve?, Sierra east side Brian?, Big Spring Canyon that last weekend Phillip?)
-July 4th weekend for the Markagunt Ride, and some time in Zion

That’s it. Damn.

  1. Well, done on your acceptance and a quality two weeks of activity!Be sure to swing though Hailey en route north, just about 7 hours south of Missoula on the 93 – good riding to be had!For the KMC, which quads are needed or will the Kaibab Forest map do the trick?

  2. The FS map will do, I can’t imagine the quads (of which you’d need MANY) would be more useful. Navigation is (I think) pretty easy. I’m looking forward to that one.

  3. What do you mean “vacations are finite”???You’re going to grad school – the next two years of your life are vacation…okady – no really – I understand…

  4. congrats on the grad school acceptance.moving is exciting, especially a big change like to the other end of the rocky mountains. I’m sure you’ll love the riding in montana, with the flexible schedule of grad school, I bet you’ll be riding even more up there than now.

  5. Congrats on the next step. Probably starting in on my masters this fall.Would love to show you around, including a trip to Deschutes Brewery. The weekends in that timeframe are booked, but if you let me know far enough in advance I could come down with something “cough, cough.”

  6. We have lots of nasty, exotic diseases down here.

  7. Wow, congrats on the acceptance Dave. KMC and Markagunt tentatively penciled in the schedule…

  8. Penciled in those dates Dave, we can talk logistics as it gets closer. Dam you for getting a Grand Canyon Packraft trip into my head. Paddling hermit and the lower rapids would be a blast.
