A Question of Scale
Paige emailed me today asking about the progress of the Alaska move. The real and only answer is that I’ve been thinking about it, a lot. She did attach her and Luc’s argument in the affirmative. (I heart Ronald Jenkees.) That argument, in more prosaic terms, is that Alaska has big wilderness of a kind…

10 months of skiing
First day of skiing this season was late October. As of today, we’re still going strong. [vimeo 25874444] Jewel has good corn early, and is remarkably un-suncupped. The silt plume in Flathead Lake is pretty impressive. Black Lake is still frozen almost totally solid, and the parking lot at Camp Misery is under a good 6…

Backing down
Otherwise known as bailing. A very important thing that doesn’t get spoken about nearly enough, especially in the outdoor adventure world. Two interesting examples on my radar lately: With the later it’s nice to see the slick, increasingly influential Camp4 boys speaking honestly in a way that goes a fair bit beyond media relations.…

Tools; choices
The test Hoks are going back home soon, and after making sure I have all the relevant shots I’ll need for the BPL review, I cannot not share this one. From left to right, weights are per foot: Atlas Run snowshoe, 1 lb 5.5 oz MSR Lightning Ascent (W’s, 25″), 1 lb 12 oz Tubbs…

Taking stock: day trips are bullshit
I’ve had a few ideas washing around my head for a while, and wanted to share some on my new favorite music, and result of both is the following video. Going through the material I realized that I’ve had quite a good 2011 thus far, and it also struck me that the numerous multiday trips…

Summer
The first sign of summer is the first trip where I’m dripping sweat, sucking water like crazy, and generally crawling from the heat. Tthis seems to happen in early June. Today, in fact. The plan; drive to GNP, bike from Avalanche to The Loop, hike to the snowline, skin up to Swiftcurrent Pass, summit the…

Lurkin’
Short skis, floppy boots, a lurk, shorts and corn snow work well together. Some basics of skiing, like facing down the fall line and keeping a still upper body, transfer directly. Others, like not getting super backseat, obviously do not. I recommend that you try it.

The hardest trip I’ve ever done (yet)
Let me begin at the end. After catching a wrong turn and finally making it out of Holland Creek canyon, the horse trail contoured around the hillside and dropped into the foothills. The lake was somewhere off to the right in the haze of lodgepoles. I had 1.5 to 2 miles left. My feet hurt…

SW Bob Memorial Traverse: A Trip Planning Case Study
So I want to plan a trip for this coming, three day, weekend. A precious thing, those three days, to be used wisely (hence the above image, which has nothing to do with the conditions I’ll find on my trip). It’s much more accurate say that I’ve been planning this trip, for a couple months. …

Altai Hok: by the numbers
The prototype, test pair of Altai Hoks arrived right as I left for work Friday (I saw the UPS from our alley parking spot, and turned the truck off to go back inside and unbox them). So I went skiing, for the first time in over a month, Friday evening and yesterday. Big Mountains still…
